Human Rights Dialogue: Mutual Aid

Join us for an interactive workshop on mutual aid, inspired by the transformative work of Mariame Kaba and Dean Spade. This session will explore how communities can come together to meet immediate needs while building long-term systems of care and solidarity beyond traditional charity models.

Drawing on Kaba’s emphasis on collective care, alongside Spade’s practical frameworks for organizing mutual aid projects, participants will gain both theoretical grounding and actionable tools. We will discuss the principles that distinguish mutual aid from charity, including shared responsibility and a commitment to addressing root causes of inequality.

Through guided discussion and collaborative exercises, attendees will reflect on their own communities and identify opportunities for building or strengthening mutual aid networks. Whether you are new to these ideas or already involved in grassroots organizing, this workshop is open for everyone.

Together we will imagine and practice ways of supporting one another that are rooted in trust, dignity and collective power. By the end of the session, participants will leave with concrete ideas, resources and connections to help sustain mutual aid efforts in their own contexts.

This workshop is facilitated by Zouhair Hammana, a lecturer and PhD researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His work engages critically with questions of pedagogy, institutional structures and transformative learning practices.

All are welcome to join this space of learning, reflection and collective action.

About Dokhuis Dialogue
In the Dokhuis Dialogue, we make our search for ways of living together tangible by engaging with the topic of human rights. In this dialogue series — organized by Hosein, Nickel, and Inge — we explore what human rights are, where they are vulnerable, and how we can protect them. By differing respectfully and listening to one another’s experiences, we create awareness, deepen understanding, and build real bridges between people, perspectives, and ways of thinking.

The dialogue evenings include workshops, reading sessions, lectures, film screenings with discussions, and conversations with experts from legal, journalistic, political, and activist backgrounds. In various ways, we invite you to be curious and to engage with human rights on both a personal and collective level.

During the evening, we will jointly decide on the language of the event. Are you not very comfortable speaking English, or do you prefer not to speak Dutch? No worries, we will figure it out together.
