	 Sarojini Lewis adopts the view of an unnamed pearl diver\nfrom a letter\n
	about the North Moluccan Island of Ternate in Indonesia. Waves of\nTernate
	: Collecting\nambiguous memories by a Pearl Diver without a name is an art
	ist book that\ncontains a\nvisual narrative\, a dialogue of colour\, paper
	 and archives created by Lewis in\ncollaboration\nwith designer Edwin van 
	Gelder and risographs printed by Stencilwerck.\n\nLewis traces three gener
	ations of women in Ternate in the 19 th century\,\nreflecting on\ngenealog
	y\, gender and colonial memory\, as she evokes family memories through the
	\ndiver’s\neyes. In her visual narrative she embodies missing and erased ‘
	local’ knowledge\,\nshe\ndocuments family objects New York\, and describes
	 ambiguous memories.\n\nCurrents of unfamiliar navigations in the Indian O
	cean led to emotional layered\nlandscapes\,\nthe line drawings of Lewis’ h
	er daughter\, and her embodiment refers to pearls as\nhidden\nknowledge th
	at shapes us. Page by page this narrative of Ternate uses various\narchiva
	l\ncollections of the Rijksmuseum\, University of Leiden\, women divers in
	 Uraguchi\nKusukazu’s\narchive and a family archive with collaborator Nels
	on Harst in New York.\nRomanticized\nlandscapes and photographs\, containi
	ng a predominant male gaze are overlayered\nwith her\nbody. They transitio
	n with a notion in a letter:\nA note with ink\, a pearl diver and my body 
	collide. Mirroring my own body and\nsearching for\nyours. I was missing yo
	ur reflection in the mirror. Am I writing this letter for\nyou?
